A White Poodle Climbed Up to the Stove to Check on the Frying Pan
Standing on the burner grates of a gas stove, a fluffy white Poodle looks over his shoulder with a guilty expression, his dark eyes wide and his curly ears hanging softly. A black frying pan holds a few bits of leftover food, and the kitchen behind him is full of the quiet mess of a busy evening: a rack of dishes, bottles by the sink, a bowl of onions, and a blue dish towel. His paws rest carefully between the knobs.
Poodles are very smart dogs with athletic builds and a talent for solving problems, including how to reach the counter. They are quick to learn, sensitive to their people's moods, and thrive on activity and training. A stovetop is one of the most dangerous places for a dog. A burner can still be hot after cooking, a knob can be switched on by accident, and hot grease or food can burn a mouth or paws. If your dog likes the counter, keep it clear of food, wipe up smells, and use stove knob covers. Teach an off cue and reward him for four paws on the floor. Give him a challenging puzzle toy instead. If he is burned or swallows something that worries you, call your vet right away.
He seems to know he has gone somewhere he should not. Still, the way he picked his footing between the burners is rather impressive.
