A Cocker Spaniel Sits Beside a Broken Vase With Sorry Eyes
Lamplight glows over a living room floor strewn with pink roses, green leaves, and broken pieces of a blue and white vase. A brown and white parti-color Cocker Spaniel sits to the side with his long, silky ears hanging low, his head turned and his eyes soft and worried. His shoulders are slumped, and a petal has landed near his front paw. A sofa, a side table, and a basket of blankets sit quietly behind him.
Cocker Spaniels are affectionate, sensitive dogs, and they usually try hard to please. They often read their people's moods very well, which is why a sheepish dog can look so apologetic after a crash. They are also energetic, and a swishing tail can sweep objects off a low table in an instant. If a vase breaks, keep your dog out of the room until you have swept up every piece, because shards can cut paws. Check his feet afterward and call your vet if he is limping or licking a paw. Some flowers are unsafe for dogs, so check any bouquet. Move vases to higher spots, and give him a long walk or a game to burn off extra energy.
He looks truly sorry, even though it was only an accident. Somebody is going to get a big hug soon, and the broom will take care of the rest, so the mess is much smaller than the worry in those eyes.
