The Cocker Spaniel Decided to Help With the Dirty Dishes
The dishes were waiting to be washed, and now the dog is waiting in the sink. A buff Cocker Spaniel named Waffles sits right on top of a stack of plates, with forks and spoons around her paws and a glass tumbler leaning at her side. Her long, golden ears hang down on both sides as she looks up with big, brown, hopeful eyes. A bottle of soap and a damp towel stand nearby.
Cocker Spaniels have a legendary sense of smell and a gentle, merry nature. A sink full of used dishes holds hundreds of interesting scents, from last night's dinner to this morning's toast. For a food-loving breed, that is a huge invitation. Their silky coats and long ears also pick up grease and crumbs easily, so a gentle wipe of the ears is a good idea after a messy adventure.
A dog in the sink can be risky. Broken plates, sharp knives and chemical cleaners can all hurt a curious dog, and licking dirty dishes can upset the stomach. It is best to rinse or soak dishes right away and keep dangerous items out of reach. If your dog cuts a paw or swallows cleaner, call your vet immediately.
Waffles does not seem to know any of that. She is perfectly comfortable among the pots and plates, a sweet-faced dishwasher who has decided that licking everything counts as helping.
