The Shiba Inu Found the Peanut Butter and Could Not Stop Smiling
There is a smile on this dog's face, and a smear of peanut butter on his nose to explain it. A red Shiba Inu named Mochi sits on the sunlit floor next to an open jar, its lid nowhere in sight, with a creamy brown spot on the tip of his muzzle and a tiny, satisfied grin. His ears are up, his eyes are bright and a grey rug lies behind him, as if the whole scene was set up for a portrait.
Shiba Inus are small, bold, spirited dogs from Japan, known for their foxlike faces and independent minds. They are clever and clean, and they can be quite determined when they want something. That independence means they do not always follow commands, so secure storage is important. A Shiba who has learned to open a cupboard will happily do it again.
Peanut butter is a popular dog treat, but check the label first. Some brands are sweetened with xylitol, which is toxic to dogs, so always use a variety made without it. Even safe peanut butter is rich, and too much can upset the stomach or add weight. A small spoonful in a puzzle toy is a nice reward, and your vet can advise on amounts.
Mochi is clearly very pleased with himself. He does not even try to hide the evidence, and with that smile it would be hard to stay upset for long.
