The Shiba Inu Took a Seat Right in the Dirty Dishes

The sink is full of last night's dishes, and so is the dog. A black and tan Shiba Inu named Kuma sits among the plates with his ears standing tall and a small, sly smile on his face. Spaghetti-stained bowls, forks and spoons are stacked around his paws, and a sponge and a bottle of soap sit on the counter behind him, catching the soft morning light.

Shiba Inus are small, agile dogs from Japan with fox-like faces and plenty of attitude. They are known for being clean, clever and independent, and many like to climb and explore high places. A Shiba who has learned how to get onto the counter will return again and again, because kitchens are full of scent and the rewards are real.

A kitchen sink is not a safe place for a dog. Plates can break, knives can cut paws, and leftover sauces may contain onion, garlic or other ingredients unsafe for dogs. Cleaning products are harmful if licked. It is best to rinse dishes promptly and keep the dishwasher closed. Call your vet if your dog licks soap or swallows something sharp.

Kuma wears a pleased and slightly smug look. He has a perfect view of the kitchen and a good supply of crumbs, and he is in no hurry to leave his new throne.
