A Red Maine Coon Waited by the Bread for Someone to Notice
Warm morning light catches the copper fur of a red Maine Coon who sits upright on the kitchen counter, tail curved behind him. Beside his paws rests a loaf of bread with a large bite taken from one end, and crumbs are sprinkled across the dark surface. His amber eyes are focused and guilty at once, his ear tufts rise like little brushes, and a plate and a few jars wait behind him.
Maine Coons are one of the largest domestic cat breeds, known for their shaggy coats, tufted ears, and friendly, easygoing personalities. They are often described as gentle giants, and many enjoy following people around the house. Because they are big and strong, counters are easy to reach, and a loaf of bread may smell irresistible. A taste of plain bread is not usually dangerous, but it is not good nutrition, and raw dough can be harmful, so call your vet if a cat eats it. Keeping bread in a closed bin, and offering a tall cat tree as an alternative perch, helps keep the kitchen peaceful.
He is sitting with such confidence that you might think the bread was his from the start. The crumbs on the counter tell a different story, but his fluffy tail only swishes slowly. Gentle giants can be sneaky too. Cleanup will involve a damp cloth, a loaf with a new home, and a very smug cat on the sidelines.
