A Tortoiseshell Looked Away While the Cookies Rolled Across the Table
A tipped tin lies on the table, golden cookies have rolled from its mouth, and a tortoiseshell cat sits nearby with her face turned politely away. Her coat is a rich mix of black, brown, and amber, her ears are alert, and her green eye catches the light. A knit blanket and a basket sit behind her, and a couple of cookie crumbs rest near her paw. It looks as if the holiday baking has met an unexpected inspector.
Tortoiseshell cats are known for their mixed black and orange coats, and fans often talk about their strong personalities, sometimes called tortitude. Like all cats, they are curious and quick to explore a new smell. Cookies are not good for cats. Sugar and butter are not part of a healthy cat diet, and chocolate, raisins, nuts, and some sweeteners can be dangerous. Keeping tins closed and out of reach is the best protection, and if your cat eats something risky, call your vet. Offering her own treats during the holiday rush gives her something to enjoy while the baking goes on.
She is acting as though she has never seen a cookie in her life. The tin will be put back on a high shelf, and the cookies will go to the trash. Even so, she has the look of someone who would do it all again.
