A Golden Retriever Can't Hide the Sandwich She Took From the Counter
The sandwich was on the counter, and now it is on the floor with a big bite out of it. A golden Retriever lies beside it with soft brown eyes and ears pulled back, her cream coat bright in the morning sun. The tile is dotted with crumbs, and a counter full of dishes and laundry in the background suggests a very busy house.
Golden Retrievers have a famous love for food and a gentle, friendly temperament. They were bred to retrieve game for hunters, and that soft mouth makes them very good at carrying things without damaging them, including a lunch. Many Goldens will cheerfully take food from a low table when no one is watching.
Sandwiches can include things that are unsafe for dogs, like onions, garlic, certain sauces and some sweeteners. Bread alone is not harmful in small amounts, but it adds extra calories. Teaching a solid leave-it command and keeping food away from the edge of the counter are the most helpful steps. If your dog eats something worrying, call your vet.
Retrievers are also famous for wearing their feelings on their faces, and this one cannot hide a thing. The sheepish look says she knows what she did, though it does not say she is truly sorry. She is sitting beside the evidence with her heart open. She will be forgiven, as Goldens usually are.
