The Aussie Is Looking Anywhere Except at the Spilled Chips

AI imageaustralian shepherdpotato chipsliving room

Potato chips cover the floor like golden leaves, and in the middle of them sits a black tricolor Australian Shepherd with her head turned to the side. One amber eye glances back toward the camera, then slides away again. A crinkled bag lies open next to her paws, spilling more chips onto the wood, and her white socks and chest are surrounded by crumbs. Behind her, a jacket hangs over the sofa, a pair of sneakers sit on the floor, and a basket and a few dog toys wait in the corner.

Australian Shepherds are bright, athletic herding dogs, and a smart Aussie can learn how to open bags, find snacks, and outsmart baby gates. Salty snacks like potato chips are not a healthy treat for dogs, because too much salt and grease can upset their stomachs, and some flavors contain onion or garlic powder that can be harmful. Keeping snacks in closed cabinets and teaching a solid leave it cue are the best defenses. Mental games and plenty of exercise can also keep an Aussie from inventing her own projects. If your dog eats a lot of salty food or seems unwell, contact your vet.

The best part is the side-eye. She is trying so hard to look like she just happened to be sitting in a pile of chips. Of course, the crumbs on her paws tell a different story. She is a good dog who made one very crunchy decision, and that is easy to forgive.
