A Package Arrived This Morning. The Goldendoodle Opened It Her Way.
A curly apricot Goldendoodle sits on the wooden floor with her nose lifted and her gaze fixed somewhere to the right, and the cardboard box beside her has been ripped into dozens of jagged pieces. Scraps of brown cardboard scatter across the floor and drift under a gray couch, and a green plant stands in a clay pot in the background. A pair of socks and sneakers rest at the edge of the room. Her fluffy ears and teddy bear face give her a calm look. We'll call her Maple, and she's thinking of other things.
Goldendoodles are a cross between Golden Retrievers and Poodles, and they tend to be friendly, bright and full of energy. Their curly coat may shed less than some breeds, but it still needs frequent brushing to prevent mats. Like many retrievers, they love to carry and chew things, and a delivery box can be the best toy of the week. Small bits of cardboard are usually not a big problem, but swallowing a lot can upset the stomach, so call your vet if you're concerned. Offer safe chews and a daily game of fetch to use up that energy.
Maple isn't going to look at the box. She's keeping her chin up and her whiskers still, hoping that the mess will somehow sort itself out. The recycling bin will get a fresh load today, and the Goldendoodle will probably get a new toy of her own.
