The Rope Toy Was Almost Bigger Than Her Face. She Held On Anyway.
Her rope toy is nearly as big as her muzzle, and she is not letting go. The Blenheim puppy sits upright in a cozy, cluttered room, chestnut ears framing a white face and a bold red patch over one eye. Frayed rope dangles from the corner of her mouth, and her wide, dark eyes say that this is her toy and she has things to do.
Chewing is not naughty behavior in puppies, it is how they explore the world and ease the ache of growing teeth. The trick is giving them good things to chew. Rope toys, rubber toys, and sturdy chew items are popular, but check them regularly. Loose strands of rope can be swallowed and cause trouble, so replace a toy once it starts to unravel, and always supervise play.
It helps to keep a few toys in rotation and put the others away, so each one feels new when it comes back out. If a puppy goes for a shoe or a table leg, calmly trade it for an approved toy and offer praise when she takes it. Cavaliers are eager to please, and they usually respond well to gentle, consistent guidance.
For now, the only thing at stake is who gets the last word on this particular knot. The puppy has made her position clear, and the rope is going nowhere.
