One Puppy, One Lawn, and a Roll That Went Gloriously Sideways

AI imagetricolor cavalierpuppybackyard

The grass is cool, the sun is out, and a tricolor puppy has just flopped onto his side in the middle of a roll. His paws point in several directions, his pink tongue is out, and his black ears are splayed in the grass. Behind him a wooden fence and green shrubs frame the yard, and he seems to be the happiest creature in it.

Rolling in grass is a normal and joyful dog behavior. Many dogs do it to scratch an itch, to explore a new scent, or just because it feels good. Puppies tumble a lot as they learn to control their legs, and short bursts of play followed by a rest are healthy. A fenced yard gives them room to practice safely.

Before long outdoor sessions, a few precautions help. Check that the fence has no gaps, avoid lawns that were recently treated with chemicals, and keep an eye out for burrs or insects. Ask your vet about parasite prevention and about when your puppy is protected enough for places other dogs visit.

Cavaliers are cheerful spaniels who often keep a puppy-like playfulness for years. They enjoy a walk or a game of fetch as well as a cuddle on the couch, so the lawn is a good place to start a lifetime of fun. This little guy is making that very clear with every wiggle.
