Five Puppies Spotted One Tennis Ball and Everything Got Competitive
Five chocolate-brown puppies are squeezed shoulder to shoulder, and all of them want the same thing. A bright yellow-green tennis ball is held in the front puppy's mouth, and four other curly faces look on, some at the ball and some at the camera. Their coats are a deep cocoa shade, the ears are soft and wavy, and the rug beneath them is already well rumpled from play.
Tennis balls are among the most popular dog toys, and Havanese tend to enjoy a game of fetch or chase. For puppies, make sure the ball is large enough that it cannot be swallowed, and avoid letting a dog chew it for long periods, because the fuzzy cover can wear down teeth and be swallowed in pieces. Supervised play is best, and a dog-safe rubber ball is a good alternative.
With a group of puppies, it can help to have more than one toy so that no one has to wait too long. Sharing is a skill that puppies learn slowly, and it takes patience from everyone. If one gets too possessive, trade the item for a treat and give it back after a moment, so she learns that handing things over is safe.
For these five, the match is still on, and nobody has won yet. The ball is holding up well, and so is the team spirit. Whoever ends up with it will keep it for approximately one minute before the next puppy takes a turn.
