Five Puppies Found One Old Crate With Room for Exactly Five

Somebody found an old wooden crate, lined it with a soft blanket and apparently forgot to mention it was reserved for adults, because five blue merle Border Collie puppies have moved in. They are heaped together with chins on edges and paws dangling, some wide awake and curious, others half asleep. A few have darker coats with touches of black and white, while others look silvery gray.

Crates and boxes appeal to puppies for the same reason hiding spots appeal to cats: edges and walls make a small animal feel protected. That is also why a well-introduced crate can work for a pup at home, as a safe, quiet den. If you try one, pick a size that lets the dog stand and turn around, add soft bedding, and never use it as punishment.

A cautionary note about old wooden crates, though. Splinters, rusty nails and flaking paint are all things a chewing puppy can run into, so this kind of crate is a fun picture but a better prop than a permanent bed. Chewing is a normal part of puppyhood, so offering safe chew toys and keeping hazards out of reach is the simplest way to avoid trouble.

The five in the crate have no concerns about any of that. They have found a spot where all five can squeeze in at once, and they plan to stay there until someone offers dinner.
