Five Heads Popped Up Over the Bed. Something Was Happening.
The edge of the bed has become a lookout post. Five blue merle Border Collie puppies are lined up side by side with chins on the mattress and eyes fixed on something in the room, each with a slightly different expression. Two are sleepy, one looks puzzled, and one is plainly plotting. Behind them the covers are bunched up and the room is a happy mess of clothes and toys.
Puppies and beds are a classic combination, but for the youngest pups there is one thing to watch: jumping down. Small dogs can hurt their legs and backs leaping from furniture, so ramps, steps or simply lifting a puppy down are kinder options. It is also worth thinking early about whether you want your dog on the furniture, since habits formed in puppyhood tend to stick.
Border Collies are keen watchers, and this lineup shows it. They study the people in the room closely, which makes them quick to learn routines and cues. That attentiveness is a big part of why the breed does so well at training, agility and herding trials, and why a puppy this young can start picking up manners with kind, consistent guidance.
Whatever is happening on the other side of the room, five heads have turned toward it at the same time. Whether it is a treat, a toy or just a person walking by, the answer will be revealed shortly.
