One Puppy, One Field of Daisies, and a Very Thoughtful Look

Surrounded by a carpet of white daisies, a single red and white Border Collie puppy sits upright and gazes to one side with soft brown eyes. His white chest is bright in the sunshine, one ear is folded and the other is still deciding, and a few petals are tangled in his fur. Behind him a wooden fence and a few green shrubs mark the edge of the yard.

A flower-filled lawn is a lovely place for a puppy, but not every garden plant is friendly to dogs. Some flowers and bulbs can upset a stomach or cause other problems if chewed, so it helps to learn which plants are safe in your yard, or ask your vet or local garden center. Daisies are common lawn flowers, but a puppy that likes to nibble should be watched, and any lawn treated with chemicals should be avoided entirely.

Spring is a great time to start outdoor training with a young Border Collie. The breed loves having something to think about, and short sessions with praise, a few treats and a calm voice can teach the basics of sit, stay and come. A garden full of new smells is the perfect classroom, as long as you keep sessions short and cheerful.

This pup, for the moment, is doing the most important thing a puppy can do in a daisy field, which is sitting very still while the whole world smells wonderful.
