The Flower Pot Was Meant for Petunias. Five Pups Had Other Plans.

Instead of a plant, this big terracotta pot has been filled with five chocolate-brown Havanese puppies, each one pressed against the others so tightly that they look like a bouquet of curly fur. Their dark eyes gaze out in different directions, a few ears flop over the rim, and sunlight pours in from a window behind them.

Small dogs and containers go together, because tight spaces feel snug and safe to a puppy. However, a clay pot is heavy and can tip, and dirt and plants are not meant for puppies. If a pup is going to be in or near a pot, make sure it's sturdy and clean, and never leave a young dog unsupervised. Keep houseplants out of reach, as many are harmful to pets if eaten.

The Havanese is a breed with a silky, wavy coat that can darken or lighten as a puppy matures, so a chocolate puppy may look somewhat different as an adult. Many owners enjoy watching the coat change. Regular grooming from an early age helps keep it healthy, and most Havanese learn to enjoy the attention.

For now, though, the pot belongs to the puppies. It holds five of them with room for exactly none of the plants. Outside the frame, a houseplant is probably holding its leaves very still, hoping none of these curious noses turn its way.
