One Slipper, One Chocolate Puppy, and a Very Serious Chew
With a serious frown and his curly ear flopped over one eye, a chocolate Havanese puppy has found a slipper and is working on it with great determination. He rests his chin on the felt, and his paws hold it still. A window and a small potted plant glow behind him, and a few blankets and toys lie scattered on the floor.
Slippers make irresistible chew toys for puppies. They smell like the people they love, and the soft, chewy fabric feels good on sore gums. Teething begins at a few months of age and can last for a while, so it's normal for a pup to chew. Rather than scolding, trade the slipper for a proper chew toy, and keep shoes out of reach. If your pup is chewing constantly or seems uncomfortable, ask your vet.
Havanese are intelligent and sensitive, so positive training tends to work best. Praise a puppy when it chooses its own toy, and it will be more likely to do so again. Keep a basket of safe chews in each room, and you will give your pup plenty of better options.
For now, though, this pup is not interested in the lesson. He has a slipper, he has a plan, and he is taking it seriously. Every few seconds he stops, peeks up to see if anyone is watching, and then goes right back to chewing with extra enthusiasm and a muffled growl.
