A Small Havanese Turned a Kiddie Pool Into a Splash Zone
Water is flying in every direction as a black and white Havanese puppy hops around a blue kiddie pool. His mouth is open in a delighted pant, his fluffy fur is plastered flat and drops sparkle in the air around his paws. The backyard behind him, with a wooden fence and a few patio stones, is wet from earlier splashes.
A shallow pool is a good way to introduce a young dog to water. Fill it with just a few inches of clean, cool water, keep the pup within reach, and never leave it alone. Most puppies learn to enjoy water in their own time, and a calm introduction with lots of praise goes a long way. After the swim, dry the coat well, since a long, silky coat can stay damp and tangle.
Hot days call for care, too. Dogs can overheat, so shade and fresh drinking water should always be available. A small dog like a Havanese can tire quickly, so keep splash sessions short. If your puppy seems unsure, there is no need to push it: let it explore the edge of the pool at its own pace.
This little splasher, however, is right at home. He has a big grin and a soaking coat, and he looks ready for another round. Each hop sends up a fresh fountain, and by the time he finishes there will be more water on the patio than in the pool, which seems fine to him.
