Two Saint Bernard Pups Grabbed One Sock and Neither Would Let Go

The great sock tug-of-war is under way, and two red and white Saint Bernard puppies are giving it everything they have. Their broad, wrinkled faces are nearly touching, big white paws are planted on the rug, and the sock is stretched between them. Their dark masks and soft floppy ears give each one a serious, thoughtful look, and a sunny living room stretches out behind them.

Saint Bernards are famous for their size, and even as puppies they carry a lot of weight on big bones. This means their joints deserve care while they grow. Many vets suggest avoiding long runs, repetitive jumping and too many stairs for giant-breed puppies, and feeding a diet made for large breed puppies. Ask your vet for guidance on food and exercise, because a giant pup grows quickly.

The breed is also known for a gentle, patient nature. Saint Bernards were once used as rescue dogs in the Swiss Alps, and their calm temperament is part of their appeal today. Even so, a puppy is a puppy, and these two clearly enjoy a good tug. Swap socks for a proper rope or toy to keep laundry safe.

Nobody is winning yet. The sock has gotten longer, the growls are small and the tails are wagging at full speed. A sunbeam creeps across the rug as the tugging continues, and sooner or later one of them will let go and tumble backward onto the nearest big paw.
