Four Big-Pawed Puppies Spotted a Butterfly and Gave Chase
Across a sunny green lawn, four red and white Saint Bernard puppies are on the move. The pup in front is grinning with its tongue out, the second has just noticed something exciting, and two more are trotting up behind. An orange butterfly flits near the garden beyond them, and a wooden fence and green shrubs frame the yard.
Saint Bernard puppies grow at an astonishing pace, and they have big feet that they have not quite learned to control. That is why a soft lawn is a great place for them to play. Short, relaxed sessions are best at this stage, since too much high-impact activity can strain growing joints. Fresh water and shade are essential, because large, thick-coated breeds can overheat on warm days.
A butterfly is a harmless chase for puppies, but garden creatures like bees and wasps can sting curious noses. If your puppy gets stung and swells up or seems unwell, call your vet. Training a solid recall early, with treats and a happy voice, helps a big dog learn to come back even when something fascinating is flying around.
For this group, the butterfly is clearly the most interesting thing in the world. They may not catch it, but they are certainly having a good time trying. Their ears bounce with every step, and the grass is already flattened where the biggest one slid to a stop to watch the butterfly rise higher.
