A Yawn Went Around the Couch and Three Puppies Caught It

AI imagesaint bernardcouchyawning

It started with one, and then it spread: three red and white Saint Bernard puppies on a sofa are all yawning at once, their mouths wide open and their pink tongues curled. Their eyes are squeezed shut, their brown ears are flopped back and their white chests are fluffy. A gray blanket, a basket of toys and a houseplant sit behind them in the cozy living room.

A yawn like this usually means a puppy is tired, though dogs also yawn when they are stretching or feeling a little unsure. A pup who has played hard and is ready for a nap is a common sight, and the best thing to do is let them rest. Giant breed puppies grow quickly and need a lot of sleep, so a quiet space makes a difference.

Saint Bernards are known for their easygoing nature, and they are also known for drooling, which makes a big yawn a bit damp. Keeping a towel handy is a good idea if you live with one. Because they can be heavy on a sofa, many owners teach their dog early on whether furniture is allowed, since habits formed in puppyhood tend to last.

The three are about to drift off, one after another. The couch will be warm, and the yawns will turn to soft snores.
