A Little Puppy Stopped at the Pond and Thought Hard About It
Standing at the edge of the water, one cream puppy looks off to the side with a thoughtful, serious expression. His fur is soft and clean on top, while his paws show a bit of mud from the shore. Behind him, the pond is a patchwork of green algae, reeds, and floating leaves, and the evening light turns the rim of the grass gold. He sits perfectly still, as though he has just spotted something moving.
Water is exciting for a puppy, and Golden Retrievers were bred as water retrievers, so many of them take to it eagerly. Still, a pond needs caution. Green algae can be toxic, stagnant water may carry germs, and young puppies can tire quickly or get stuck at a steep edge. Keep a pup on a leash near unfamiliar water, rinse him off afterward, and discourage drinking from ponds. Talk to your vet about any concerns.
Introducing water gradually works best. Start in shallow, clean water, let the puppy set the pace, and always stay close. Treats and happy praise help build a good first impression. A towel is handy for the ride home, since muddy paws tend to find the couch.
For now, this pup is observing from a safe distance, deciding what he thinks of the big, wet world. He may be small, but he is clearly a deep thinker.
