The Weimaraner Puppy Sat Beside a Bowl Bigger Than Her Whole Head

The bowl is enormous, and the puppy knows it. She sits very straight beside a wide ceramic dish heaped with kibble, a few pieces already scattered on the floor like evidence. Her ears hang low, her wide eyes are fixed on something just past us, and her little paws are lined up neatly in front of her. In the cluttered, sunny room behind her are a basket of toys, a pair of slippers and a set of keys left on a chair.

Young Weimaraners are growing fast, and mealtimes matter. Most vets suggest feeding puppies several smaller meals a day instead of one large one, and measuring portions carefully rather than leaving a heaped bowl out. The breed has a deep chest, and deep-chested dogs can be at higher risk of a serious stomach problem called bloat, so many vets recommend calm time around meals and not rushing into hard exercise right after eating. Talk to your vet about the right food, amount and schedule for your puppy's age and size.

For now the bowl waits, the puppy waits, and everyone is pretending to be very patient. Dinner is almost certainly about to be a success.

Her patience is impressive for someone so small. Puppies this age live in the moment, and she is clearly thinking about one thing only. Soon enough the bowl will be empty, the floor will be tidy again, and her belly will be perfectly round.
