Four Beagle Puppies Rested Their Chins on the Bed and Waited
A row of four small tricolor faces appears at the edge of a rumpled gray bed, each puppy resting his chin and front paws neatly on the blanket. Their dark eyes are rimmed with tan and their white blazes shine. They all look at the same spot, with brows slightly raised, as if waiting for a verdict. Below the mattress, a pile of denim, a stuffed bunny and a half-hidden toy mark the rest of the room.
A bed is a tempting spot for a puppy, but getting down is harder than getting up. Small Beagles can hurt themselves jumping off high furniture, so a ramp, a step stool or a low dog bed is a good idea. Beagles are also champion beggars, thanks to a very keen nose and a big appetite, and those pleading eyes work on almost everyone. To keep a Beagle at a healthy weight, measure meals, limit extras and ask your vet what amount is right.
It helps to set house rules early, because puppy habits can last a lifetime. Decide where the dog sleeps and stay consistent.
For now, four hopeful faces watch the room and wait for something good to happen. They are not in a hurry. If patience is a virtue, these four are saints, at least until the bedroom door opens and the stampede begins across the floor.
