Earl Was About to Start Rocking. Then He Looked Down at the Rug.

The wooden rocking chair creaks gently, and Earl looks down with the softest smile at the cream bundle curled on the rug beside its runners. Custard is out cold, eyes shut tight, chin pressed into the carpet, her plush tail wrapped around her like a scarf. The room around them is lived in and cozy: a mustard knit blanket over a chair, a basket of yarn, a mug and a pair of reading glasses left on the side table, framed family photos crowding the cabinet behind. It is the kind of afternoon where nobody is in any hurry at all.

Cats are famous sleepers, and many spend well over half the day dozing. Much of that rest is light, so a cat can wake quickly if something interesting happens, but a cat who is truly relaxed will sometimes sink into deep, sprawled-out sleep like this one. Choosing to nap right beside a person is a sign of trust, since sleeping is when an animal is most vulnerable. One small safety note for rocking-chair households: cats love to lie close to the runners, so it is worth glancing down before you start rocking. Sudden changes in how much your cat sleeps are worth mentioning to your vet, but a long nap near someone she loves is just good cat behavior.

Earl does not seem to be rocking much anyway. Some company is best enjoyed by sitting very still and letting the quiet do the talking.
