Gus Picked Apples From the Tree While Domino Checked the Ground

Gus reaches up into the branches and plucks one more apple, a basket already full of red and yellow fruit at his side. His cap is tipped back and his glasses are low on his nose, with scissors and tools tucked into the pockets of his fishing vest. At his feet, Domino the pied French Bulldog is much more interested in the ground, where bruised windfalls lie scattered in the grass. His nose is down and his blue collar hangs loose. A watering can, a rake and a ladder rest behind them among the trees.

Fallen apples are a typical temptation for dogs, but they are best avoided. Fruit that has been on the ground can ferment, grow mold or attract wasps, and the seeds and core are not good for dogs. A small piece of fresh, clean apple without seeds is usually considered a safe treat for many dogs, but ask your vet if you are not sure. Frenchies can have sensitive stomachs, and new foods are best introduced slowly. Keep an eye on him in orchards for bees and for rotten fruit. Short breaks in the shade and fresh water are especially important for flat-faced dogs, who warm up quickly.

Gus tucks the apple in the basket and glances down at the busy nose. He knows he will be doing some careful supervising. The orchard smells of sweet fruit and leaves, and the afternoon is long. There will be pies later, and a few dog-safe slices if everyone behaves. For now, the work goes on, one apple and one sniff at a time.
