Domino Sat Perfectly Still While Gus Fed the Ducks at the Pond

The ducks have crowded in, and Domino is sitting very still. Grandpa Gus crouches at the water's edge in his olive vest and shorts, a bit of bread pinched between his fingers and his mustache lifting with a small smile. The pied French Bulldog sits at his side with his head tilted and his dark eyes locked on the mallards paddling by. A couple of brown ducks and a green-headed drake float close to the shore. Behind them, a patch of grass, a flowerpot and a stone wall lead back to the house.

A pond visit is a lovely outing, but a few precautions help. Many parks ask visitors not to feed bread to ducks because it has little nutrition and can pollute the water, so check local advice and consider offering seeds or oats instead. Dogs should stay on a leash near wildlife, since a sudden dash toward ducks can end in a fall into the water. Frenchies are not strong swimmers. Their heavy chests and short legs make it hard for them to stay afloat, so keep them away from deep water and never let them swim without a life vest. Stagnant ponds can also contain algae that is harmful to dogs.

Domino doesn't bark or lunge. He sits and watches, brimming with curiosity, while the ducks go about their business. Gus holds out his offering and waits. It is a gentle exchange between three species, and the afternoon moves at the pace of rippling water. Everyone seems quite pleased with how well behaved the dog is being.
