The Spaniel Kept Looking Back to Count His Little Followers
Down a grassy path beside a split-rail fence, a ruby Cavalier King Charles Spaniel glances back over his shoulder with soft brown eyes. His silky chestnut ears hang in glossy waves. Trailing behind him, a line of six yellow ducklings marches in single file along the base of the fence, each one a little further back, like a yellow ribbon unspooling through the grass. The garden beyond is a happy tangle of pots, vines and sunlit leaves, and the whole yard looks fresh from morning dew.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are famous for their gentle, affectionate nature, and many are happy to be around other animals and people of all ages. They love company and do not like being left alone for long periods. Cavaliers can be prone to certain heart and neurological conditions, so regular vet visits are a good idea. If your dog likes to lead a walk, remember that ducklings are tiny and need to stay warm, so outdoor time should be short and supervised, in mild weather, and always with a safe way to keep them from wandering off or meeting hazards.
The Cavalier seems to be checking that everyone is keeping up, the way a careful guide would. Behind him, the ducklings follow without a care, and the whole parade moves along at the gentlest pace.
