A Black Newfoundland Swayed in the Hammock With a Tiny Napping Friend

AI imagenewfoundlandbunnyhammock

The hammock sways just a little, and the dog inside is fast asleep. A big black Newfoundland has stretched across the canvas with his chin on the fabric and his huge paws hanging over the side, and a small brown bunny sits tucked against his front leg with her ears relaxed. A porch rail, a few flowerpots and a patch of green yard lie behind them in the afternoon light.

Newfoundlands are large, gentle dogs with a reputation for being patient with children and other animals. Their thick, water-resistant coats are made for cold water and need frequent brushing, and they do tend to drool. They overheat in warm weather, so shade, cool water and a relaxed schedule are important for them in summer.

If you set up a hammock for pets, make sure it is secure, low to the ground and strong enough for a heavy dog. Check the fabric for tears and keep young animals from slipping through gaps. A rabbit should never be left on a hammock alone, because a fall from even a short height can hurt her. Supervised naps are always best.

The breeze is gentle, the shade is deep and the dog is snoring softly. Pip looks like she has found the most peaceful place on the porch, tucked against a very big, very calm friend.
