The Basset Puppy Sat Right in the Middle of the Presents
Long ears draping down, a lemon-and-white Basset Hound puppy sits right in the middle of a pile of gifts wrapped in brown paper and twine. His big, soulful eyes look up toward something out of the frame, perhaps a person with a treat. The tree behind him glows with lights, and a plush bunny and a few more presents round out the scene. The room is a bit messy with holiday cheer, and the puppy looks like he owns the place.
Basset Hounds are gentle, laid-back dogs with a famously keen sense of smell, second only to the bloodhound. Puppies have a lot of curiosity, and a stack of presents is an irresistible mystery. If any gifts contain food, candy or chocolate, they should be kept out of nose range, since Bassets are experts at sniffing out treats. Their long ears also trap dirt and moisture, so regular cleaning is important, as your vet can explain. Brown paper and twine are a nice eco-friendly wrap, but twine can be dangerous if swallowed. Keep it picked up and supervise carefully. Short-legged hounds like Bassets should also avoid jumping on and off furniture to protect their backs, so make sure the presents are on the floor in a safe spot.
He seems quite content to sit among the gifts, a living, breathing present himself. No bow required.
