A Border Collie Puppy Was Left Alone With the Gingerbread House
The Border Collie puppy lies on the kitchen table with his white paws stretched out and his eyes fixed on the gingerbread house a few inches away. The little house has white icing in scalloped shingles and tiny candy decorations, and a few crumbs dot the table. Greenery, a mug and a grey throw sit nearby. His eyes look curious but patient, as though he has been told this house is not for him.
Border Collies are among the smartest dogs, bred to herd sheep, so they notice every detail and need lots of mental and physical activity. A puppy can get bored if left alone for long, and that is when mischief starts. A gingerbread house is a hazard because icing, candy and spices can upset a dog's stomach, and some candies contain sweeteners like xylitol, which are dangerous. Nutmeg, a common gingerbread spice, can also be toxic in larger amounts. Keep baked goods and decorations well out of reach, and never let a dog onto a table with food. Redirect his energy with training games or a puzzle toy. Smart dogs love a challenge, and a good brain game can be as tiring as a long walk.
He is on guard duty, and the house is safe for now. A collie never takes his eyes off the flock.
