A White Kitten Stares at the Glowing Tree Lights in Wonder
Her chin is lifted, her whiskers are forward and her eyes are fixed on the twinkling lights above her. The white kitten sits on a chunky grey knit blanket on a couch, her pink nose in the air and her paws neatly together. The tree beside her is covered with pinecones and warm lights, and a bright window and a few plants fill the room behind.
Kittens are fascinated by anything that sparkles, and a Christmas tree is a wonderland of light, movement and scent. This is a normal part of a kitten's development, as exploring helps her learn about the world. The next step, of course, is climbing, so make sure the tree is stable and the lower branches are free of breakable ornaments. Keep cords covered, and don't let her drink the tree water, which may have additives. A tall scratching post or cat tree can give her an acceptable place to climb instead.
We'll call her Cloud. She stares up at the tree with the quiet wonder of a kitten who has just discovered how beautiful the world can be. In a moment she'll leap down and chase a shadow, but this small, glowing pause is a lovely picture of the season. It is a lovely small moment of wonder, the kind that comes around only once for every kitten, and it is worth enjoying while it lasts, glowing lights and all.
