An Orange Kitten Took the Candy Cane and Planned to Keep It
A candy cane in the mouth gives this orange kitten a swagger. She steps forward with the peppermint stick clamped between her teeth, her ears folded and her round amber eyes full of triumph. Behind her, a window lets in daylight and a small tree sits in the corner of a cozy room. The carpet beneath her paws is soft, and the whole scene says that she has no plans to give it back.
Candy canes are not safe for cats. Sugar-free ones may contain xylitol, which is poisonous, and any hard candy can break into sharp pieces or leave sticky wrapper bits that cats may swallow. Peppermint itself, particularly in oil form, can also be harmful to cats, so keep these treats high and out of reach. If your kitten has chewed one, talk to your vet and bring the wrapper so they know what was in it. Trading her for a toy she loves, like a small crinkle ball or a feather wand, is a gentler way to get the candy back than chasing her around the room.
Soon the candy cane will be swapped for something safer, but the moment is a classic. A small orange thief and a very red-and-white prize are a combination that is hard to forget, and it will surely be a family story for years.
