A Silver Kitten Walks Right Into the Pumpkin Carving Mess

AI imagesilver tabby kittenpumpkin seedspumpkin carving

Pumpkin seeds cover the table like confetti, and in the middle of them a small silver tabby kitten leans forward with her nose low and her whiskers spread. Pieces of orange pumpkin flesh, stringy pulp and a hollowed-out pumpkin shell sit around her, and the late afternoon sun slants across the kitchen behind her. A few dish towels hang on the counter, and her soft gray ears are tipped toward the next interesting smell.

Cats are not usually drawn to pumpkin the way dogs sometimes are, but a kitten's curiosity will take her anywhere new things appear, and this table has plenty of both smell and texture. Plain, cooked pumpkin is sometimes used in pet diets, but raw seeds, stringy pulp and seasoned pieces are not a good snack, and your vet can tell you what is appropriate for your cat.

Carving time is a good moment to think about kitchen safety. Knives, scoops and carving tools should be kept out of paw's reach, and a kitten is much safer on the floor than on a table covered with sharp objects. Candles in finished jack-o'-lanterns are also a real risk with climbing cats, so many people choose battery-powered lights.

We will call this inquisitive helper Seedy. She is carefully sniffing instead of chewing, and she has not yet decided whether pumpkin is worth her whiskers. The mess is a little much, but the helper is lovely.
