A Round-Faced Grey Kitten Carries Off Her Piece of Halloween Candy
Held carefully between her tiny teeth is a piece of candy wrapped in bright orange foil with twisted ends, and she is looking off to the side as if she has just heard footsteps. The gray kitten has a round face, big dark eyes and soft ears, and she sits on a worn wooden floor near a sofa with a gray throw blanket. A basket, a few shoes and some small pumpkins sit in the background.
Kittens explore the world with their mouths, and shiny, crinkly things like candy wrappers are very tempting. That makes Halloween candy a real hazard. Chocolate is toxic to cats and dogs, sugar-free sweets made with xylitol can be dangerous, and wrappers can block the digestive tract if swallowed. A kitten who has found a stash should have the candy gently swapped for a toy or treat.
The best way to keep your pet safe is to keep candy in a closed container or in a high cupboard, and to throw wrappers away right away. If your kitten swallows candy or wrapper pieces, or you are not sure, call your vet or an animal poison hotline instead of waiting to see what happens. Treats made for cats make a safe replacement on Halloween night.
We will call her Taffy, and she looks very proud of her find. She has not eaten it, just carried it off like treasure. A quick trade for a feather toy should keep everyone happy.
