A Black Kitten Studies the Costume Parade From Her Window Seat
Standing with her front paws on the windowsill, a fluffy black kitten gazes outside at the busiest street of the year. On the sidewalk, a child in a ghost sheet, a child in an orange pumpkin outfit with a green hat and a cat-eared trick-or-treater carry their bags from house to house. Autumn trees glow in the afternoon, and a knitted blanket on the sill gives the kitten a soft spot to perch.
Windows are like a television for indoor cats, and Halloween is a special show. Many kittens enjoy watching, though it can be overstimulating if people keep ringing the bell or knocking. Some cats find the constant noise stressful and prefer a quiet room away from the door, with a bed, water and a favorite toy to help them feel safe.
Black cats have a long folklore history around Halloween, but in real life they are just as sweet and playful as any other cat. Many shelters report that black cats can wait longer for adoption, so an extra cuddle for one is always welcome. It is also a good idea to keep cats indoors on Halloween night, since crowds, costumes and fireworks can frighten them.
We will call this little observer Shadow, and she is watching every costume go by. She does not seem scared, only curious about all the strange new people. Soon enough the sidewalk will be quiet again, and she will have plenty of stories to tell the rest of the household.
