A White Bulldog Puppy Studies the Costume Parade From the Window
With his front paws on the sill and his wrinkled face turned in profile, a white Bulldog puppy stares out at the street. Outside, a child dressed as a black cat and another in a ghost sheet carry orange buckets down the road, and houses with autumn trees and pumpkins sit in the background. On the sill beside him, a little pumpkin, a bone chew toy, a blue ball and a heap of denim and knitted blankets show where a puppy has been playing.
Puppies spend a lot of time learning about the world, and watching from a window is a safe way to take it in. Bulldog puppies are usually gentle and sometimes stubborn, and they enjoy company. At this age, positive experiences with new sights and sounds help them grow into calm adults, so pairing them with treats and calm voices works well.
Halloween night can be noisy and exciting, and a doorbell that rings a hundred times may feel like too much for a puppy. A quiet room with a bed, a chew toy and water can be a relief, and keeping pets away from the door prevents any escape when it opens. Make sure your puppy wears an ID tag, and keep candy well out of his reach.
We will call him Tank. He has found the perfect lookout post, and each costume that passes gets a careful stare. He seems to approve of all of them. The window is the best seat in the house.
