A Basset Hound Puppy Captains the Porch in His Pirate Gear
A black eye patch sits over one eye, a red bandana printed with a skull and crossbones hangs from his neck and a navy jacket with gold buttons covers his chest. The tricolor Basset Hound puppy sits on a leaf-strewn porch in the golden sunlight, with huge, droopy ears and oversized white paws that look too big for his body. Basset Hound puppies are famous for their long ears, wrinkled brows and soulful expressions. They have a superb sense of smell, second only to the Bloodhound, and love to follow a scent. They tend to be friendly and laid-back, though they can be stubborn during training, so patience and treats work best. Their long ears need regular cleaning, and a vet can show how.
Puppy costumes should be loose and comfortable. An eye patch should sit above the eye or be a decoration only, never covering the eye in a way that restricts his sight or rubs the skin. Because Basset puppies have long backs and short legs, avoid making them jump or climb stairs too much, and always lift them with support under the chest and hindquarters.
We will call him Barnacle. He may be the cutest pirate who ever sailed the porch boards. His treasure is a sunbeam and a pile of leaves. He is in no hurry to go anywhere, and the ship will wait for him.
