A Siamese Kitten Climbed Into the Jack-o'-Lantern
Two blue eyes, a pair of dark ears, and a small cream face pop out of the top of a carved jack-o'-lantern. A seal point Siamese kitten has climbed inside the pumpkin, and seeds and scraps of orange pulp are scattered on the floor around the base. Behind the pumpkin, a dark front door, a coat on a hook, and a pair of worn boots wait, with a lamp glowing and another small pumpkin on a table. The kitten looks calm, as if she has always lived in there.
Kittens love small, enclosed hiding places, because they feel safe and warm and can watch the world from a secure spot. Siamese kittens are known for being chatty, social, and clever. A hollowed pumpkin is a fun spot for a short peek, but it should not be a long-term hideout: a pumpkin starts to rot, grows mold, and may be sharp inside, and the cut edges can scratch. Keep real candles out of any pumpkin where a kitten might climb. Use battery lights instead, and clear away the seeds and pulp, which can upset a small stomach.
Let's call her Pumpkin Pie, or Piper for short. She has chosen a very round, very orange house and seems to think it is hers. A tiny head turns, a tiny nose twitches, and the pumpkin has never looked so cheerful.
