A Black Kitten Sat Next to the Candy Bowl and Watched the Door

AI imagedevon rex kittencandy bowlhalloween

Big ears, curly black fur, and a very serious expression: a tiny black Devon Rex kitten sits by the front door next to a big glass bowl of candy. The wrapped sweets in orange, purple, and black shine under the warm lamp, and the kitten gazes toward the door as if waiting for the first trick-or-treater. A woven rug, a pair of boots, a coat on the wall hook, and a few small pumpkins fill the entryway behind her.

Devon Rex kittens have soft, wavy coats and big, bat-like ears, and they are famous for being playful, clever, and people-loving. They often climb onto shoulders and love to be near their families. A candy bowl at kitten level is a problem, though. Chocolate is toxic to cats, and wrappers, especially crinkly foil or plastic, can cause choking or blockages if a kitten chews them. Put the bowl on a high table or shelf until trick-or-treaters arrive, and keep the kitten in a quiet room when the doorbell is ringing. If she eats candy or wrappers, call your vet.

We might call her Inky. She sits close to the bowl as if she is deciding whether to guard it or to join it. The lamp glows, the pumpkins grin, and a very small black cat holds her ground. Every doorway needs a good watcher.
