Somebody Walked Through the Birthday Cake and Looked Away
Two front paws rest on the kitchen floor, and both are decorated with blobs of white frosting. The chocolate-brown Havanese who owns them lies calmly, shaggy ears framing his face, and gazes off to the side as though admiring the cabinets. Bits of cake crumble lie scattered nearby, and a towel and a few bowls sit on the counter behind him. It looks as though the cake has already met its fate.
Havanese are cheerful, curious toy dogs with silky coats that need regular brushing. They are affectionate and lively, and they like to be part of whatever the family is doing, including dessert. Cake is a poor snack for dogs, because it is rich in sugar and fat, and some frostings contain chocolate or artificial sweeteners that can be dangerous. If a dog has eaten a lot, or if you are not sure what was in the cake, call your vet.
Wiping the paws and the beard is a good idea, since a dog will lick off whatever is left, and that long fur can get sticky quickly. Cakes cooling on a high shelf, or in a closed cabinet, stay safe from curious noses.
He is staring into the distance with such calm that you almost forget the frosting. A birthday has been interrupted, but the guest of honor seems unbothered.
