A Great Dane Named Moose Sits Politely in a Storm of Tissues

Even sitting, the fawn Great Dane is tall enough to look the viewer right in the eye. His black mask is solemn, his ears droop to the sides, and his dark eyes are turned up in a hopeful, innocent gaze. Beside him, a tissue box has been ripped open, and white tissues are scattered across the grey carpet like drifts of snow. A few have made it as far as the doorway.

Great Danes are often called gentle giants, and the name fits. They are usually calm, affectionate, and good with their families, and many believe they are lap dogs, even though they are far too big to fit. Their size means they can reach counters and tables that smaller dogs cannot, so keeping tempting things like tissues, food, and medicines out of reach is wise. A few tissues are usually harmless, but eating a lot of paper can upset a dog's stomach, so call your vet if you think he swallowed some. Danes need daily walks but not extreme exercise, and because they grow quickly, vets often suggest careful feeding and gentle activity for puppies. They also love company, and often follow their people from room to room.

This fellow looks so apologetic that it is hard to stay upset. We will call him Moose. A broom and a quiet moment will clean up the tissues, and a long ear scratch will settle the rest.
