Scooter the Rescue Dog Looks Away From the Soil He Spilled

AI imagerescue dogpotting soilpatio

Dark soil has poured out of a paper bag onto the patio, and the black rescue mutt beside it is looking off to one side with his chin lifted. His white chest is smudged with dirt and his ears fold neatly, and behind him a wooden fence, a watering can, and a row of plant pots hint at a gardening project that has been interrupted. He seems to be thinking very hard about something far away.

Mixed-breed dogs are one of the great pleasures of dog ownership, since each one is a unique blend of traits, and rescue dogs in particular often show deep gratitude and loyalty toward their families. Without knowing the exact mix, it is hard to predict size or energy level, so it helps to watch each dog's habits. Digging in soil is a natural behavior for many dogs. Potting soil, though, can contain fertilizers and other additives, so it is best to keep it out of reach, and if your dog eats any, call your vet. A designated digging spot in the yard can be a good alternative, with a few toys buried inside to make it exciting.

We will call him Scooter. He has a good heart and a good nose, and he is clearly enjoying the garden project more than anyone. The soil can be swept up, but the proud look will remain.
