A Spotted Bengal Sits Among the Plants She Just Dug Up
The garden bed has been dug up, and plants lie scattered among clumps of dark soil. In the middle of it all sits a spotted brown Bengal with enormous green eyes and the stillness of a cat who has just realized she has been seen. Her golden coat is patterned with dark rosettes, and a pair of gardening gloves and a blue watering can sit in the background, left behind by a gardener who stepped away for a moment.
Bengals are lively, athletic cats with a love of exploring, and they thrive when they have plenty to do. Digging is an instinctive behavior, and freshly turned soil is an irresistible invitation. For a cat who enjoys the outdoors, a supervised garden session or a secure outdoor enclosure, called a catio, can be a safe way to enjoy fresh air. Garden soil can contain fertilizers and plants that are harmful to cats, so it is important to know what is growing in your yard. If your cat eats any plants you are unsure about, call your vet. Giving your Bengal a tall tree to climb and a digging box can help her use her energy in better ways.
She is quite clearly at home in the dirt, and she is not sorry at all. The garden will need replanting, but she has made her point.
