A Silver Tabby Sits in a Snowstorm of Feathers From the Pillow
Feathers fill the air like a snow globe, and the silver tabby sits in the middle of it all with big gold eyes and a guilty face. The shredded pillow looks more like a nest, its fabric torn open and its feathery filling spread over the couch, floor and coffee table. A cup, a few books and a set of controllers sit in the background of the cozy living room.
American Shorthairs are known as healthy, good-natured cats with a long history as hunters, and the sight of fluttering feathers can wake all those old instincts. A pillow that looks and feels like a bird is a tempting target, and the soft stuffing makes a satisfying mess when it tears open.
Feathers and stuffing are not safe for cats to eat, since swallowed pieces can irritate the stomach or form a blockage. Check the room carefully, and clean up thoroughly with a vacuum. Give your cat feather wand toys instead, supervised, and put them away after playtime so she cannot chew them. If she has swallowed stuffing or seems unwell, talk to your vet.
The tabby seems to realize that she has gone a bit far, though the look is more thoughtful than sorry. There is a bit of down on her whiskers and a feather on her ear. For a cat who just discovered the most exciting pillow of her life, the mess feels like a small price to pay.
