This Red Maine Coon Is Trying to Look Innocent With a Slipper
The slipper is nearly gone, and the proud owner of the evidence is a big red Maine Coon with a gentle face. He holds the ragged gray slipper in his mouth and looks up with warm, round eyes that seem to ask whether anyone really needs it. Behind him is a basket of laundry and a houseplant in the soft morning light, and the floorboards are scattered with tufts of fluff.
Maine Coons are large, sociable cats with tufted ears and bushy tails, often called gentle giants. They like to follow their people around, and many love to carry things in their mouths, almost like a retriever. A slipper that smells like a favorite person is a natural treasure to haul across the house.
Chewing on slippers is fun for a cat, but the pieces can be a problem if swallowed. Rubber soles, foam and fabric threads do not digest, and they can cause a blockage that needs medical care. Keep shoes in a closet or a high shelf, and provide a few sturdy toys. If your cat seems to be eating fabric or acting unwell, call your vet.
Maine Coons mature slowly and tend to stay playful well into adulthood, so a big, silly kitten spirit is very much alive in this fellow. He seems to be asking, in the sweetest possible way, if the slipper can be his. The answer is probably yes, now that it is ruined.
