A Great Dane Keeps Watch Over the Teddy Bear He Tore Apart

AI imagegreat daneteddy bearliving room

The teddy bear lies in a sad heap with its stuffing pulled out in tufts, and the fawn Great Dane next to him wears the gentlest, most worried smile. His long face is tilted down, his velvety ears hang to the sides and his dark eyes look up with a little uncertainty. A lamp, a sofa and a basket of toys sit behind him in the warm room.

Great Danes are among the tallest dogs in the world, and they are known as gentle giants. Despite their size, they are usually friendly, patient and affectionate with their families. They sometimes forget how big they are, which is why a Dane can climb onto a couch, knock over a lamp or accidentally flatten a stuffed bear.

Stuffed toys can be fun for dogs, but the filling and any plastic eyes or noses can be dangerous if swallowed. After a toy comes apart, collect all the pieces and check the room. If your dog seems to have swallowed stuffing, or vomits or stops eating, call your vet. Look for toys made for large dogs, with strong seams and no small parts, and always supervise play.

The Dane looks as if he feels bad about the whole thing. He is staying close to the bear, almost like he is watching over what remains. A gentle soul, he may just be hoping the toy can be repaired. If not, he will certainly accept a new one.
