A Black German Shepherd Sits Guiltily Beside the Spilled Trash

AI imagegerman shepherdtrash cankitchen

The trash can has toppled over, and the contents have spread across the floor: wrappers, a banana peel, some cups and the leftovers of a very interesting dinner. A big black German Shepherd sits beside the wreckage with warm brown eyes fixed on the doorway, her head tilted a little to one side. Her ears are soft, and she has the posture of a dog who knows she has been caught.

German Shepherds are intelligent, loyal and hardworking dogs, used for many kinds of jobs, from herding to search and rescue. They have a strong sense of smell, and a trash can full of food scraps is an irresistible puzzle. A dog this clever can often figure out how to tip a can or open a lid.

Trash can be very dangerous for dogs. Cooked bones can splinter, corn cobs and fruit pits can block the intestines, and foods like grapes, onions and anything with xylitol are toxic. Use a can with a locking lid, or store it behind a closed door. If your dog has eaten something from the trash, call your vet, especially if you see vomiting or tiredness.

Shepherds also need lots of mental work, and a bored dog may go looking for a project. This one looks truly sorry, which is a little sweet. The cleanup will take a while, but she has a very hard face to stay cross with.
