A Dalmatian Trots Off With the Slipper and a Tiny Smile
The Dalmatian has a slipper in his mouth, and it has seen better days. The sole is frayed, the fabric is hanging in strings and a few threads dangle from his jaws. His black spots stand out against his white coat, his dark eyes are bright and his lips curve in a very small smile. A row of shoes and a plant sit behind him in the entryway.
Dalmatians are lively, athletic dogs that were once bred to run alongside carriages. They have a lot of stamina and need plenty of exercise to stay happy. A Dalmatian with too little to do can turn to chewing, and a slipper is soft, familiar and easy to carry. It smells like their person, which makes it even better.
Shoes and slippers are risky for dogs, since swallowed pieces of fabric, rubber and foam can cause a blockage. Keep them in a closet, and offer sturdy chew toys. If your dog has swallowed part of a slipper, or is vomiting or acting strange, call your vet right away. Plenty of daily exercise helps burn off the energy that leads to chewing.
The Dalmatian is proud of his prize. He trotted across the house with it, and he is not sure why anyone would be upset. His tail is probably wagging, though only the smile is visible. A lost slipper is a small price for such a happy dog.
